Sonya Newell-Smith (born 1946)
During the 1960s and 1970s Sonya Newell-Smith worked as a freelance photojournalist for The Sunday Telegraph, The Times and various Italian magazines. Self-taught under the guidance of her late husband David Newell- Smith, she published a porfolio of her work in 1971 in the British Journal of Photography under her maiden name Sonya Hirsch. From 1978 unHl 2017 she and David ran the renowned Tadema Gallery in London, selling contemporary art and antiques before specializing in jewellery, while spending their free time documenHng the vibrant street scene of Brick Lane. Sonya’s photographs demonstrate humour, energy and a deep understanding of human emotions. She continues to exhibit and publish her work, winning a gold medal at PISPA in 2024 & 2025. |
